The site of Saint Christophe
On the border between Savoy and Dauphiné, the site of St Christophe is a natural passageway between the mountains carved out by the laborious work of the waters. A natural and cultural site, it has been the stage for a long and exciting history.
In addition to the visit to the caves, discover the outstanding site of the Sardinian Way, an ancient trading route between Lyons and Turin, as well as the monument erected to the memory of Charles Emmanuel II in the 18th century, to mark the renovation of this royal road.
Two caves are accessible from the Sardinian Way, the Grotte Supérieure (Upper Cave) and the Grand Goulet. These caves were formed at the same time as the defile, or canyon, and are a result of the same erosion.
The Upper Cave is still being formed and its stalactite and stalagmite concretions continue to grow.
The Second Cave, known as "Le Grand Goulet", is dry and its concretions have stopped growing. It was completely renovated in 2002 and is now crossed by a 225m long footbridge which enables visitors to pass from one side to the other.
